Godot Progress

IF YOU HAVEN'T HEARD

FuzzBoob's Definitive Edition had swapped Development from Unity to Godot.

(As mentioned in the previous blogpost on Itch.io).

I (Pudding's Bakery / TwistCumet) wanted to just share my overall current thoughts of Godot and a wip!:

(No, this version is not playable and won't be for a while. This will be the base for each version of the game.)

So how does it compare to Unity?

It is pretty decent. I enjoy how fast the engine starts up, and have run into no issues with crashing.
It is very similar to Unity actually, minus the different coding language (Still getting the hang of slowly).

It is a bit jarring with how things are laid out differently, I do struggle trying to find what I need to do.

Worries and Concerns:

For Definitive Edition, I am using Godot 4. While this version has powerful new features, I need to use
Godot's Compatibility API so that it functions on Windows, Linux, Android, Web, etc.
The Compatibility API does not support a lot of post processing (Bloom, etc).

This is where I am worried I may not be able to remake the perspective office to be 1:1 with the original.

In addition, it lacks features such as having color changes on a texture button. I will need to re-animate
a lot of things that Unity would have done for me automatically. This will add time to development as
I need to figure out how to actually do that.

Final concern: I don't have access to how Unity does it's Crunch compression, and how it keeps the
overall file-size low. In that aspect, FuzzBoob's Definitive Edition may look higher quality, but could
potentially take up much more space. (Up to 3-5x the original).
I will look into how I could optimise the current assets and animations, just worried how much time
this may add to development.

Aaand that's it.

I like keeping you guys in the know, which is why I write these in the first place.
I do read the comments and respond when I have time, so feel free to leave
your thoughts or questions down below.

Don't worry about it. My friend was in the same boat with unity, even got a certification in it, but he is changing to something else. Stay strong, I know you guys can do it

:)

Please, when you finish this Godot definitive, put it in another type of executor, my PC doesn't support Godot and maybe it's not just me. please

just so i know, have you  had any thought about using Game Maker?  i guess it's a lot easier and good for 2D games than godot

(+1)

ehh its not really my cup of tea. I'm actually really enjoying godot, its very similar to unity.

Love to see progression <3

Love this game, keep up the good work an goodluck with the engine!

learning a new engine must be tough, Goodluck!

Just an idea and nothing more then that...

Have you had any thought of using Unreal Engine 5?

(+1)

Unreal Engine 5 is a good engine for making realistic 3D games. Unfortunately, it has too much overhead to just be a 2D game.

Godot is more suitable for the task.

You guys are very talented, you should work as professional game devs

(+3)

take your time mate just cause unity is a bitch we won't be mad at you needing to learn a new engine good luck mate

Finally... PORT TO MOBILE!!!

Can the release of the game be moved to an earlier date if the development goes well?

Thank you for the update, glad to see progress is getting made. Thankfully there's tutorials online about compressing files on Godot from videos on YT to places like twitter that go through it. Best of luck making the full transition.

Hey so it looks like Unity gave in and updated their changes so that the new policies don't affect any games released before this coming January + a lot more. You could finish the game on Unity and then go to Godot later if that makes everything easier.

while that might be good for a shortwhile its just taking the bandaid off slower, also it doesnt hurt unity as much as outright dropping it for its trash ceo.

You and glazed have been working on this for a while and it sucks that you had such a big roadblock (fr Unity what are you doing). I hope those worries aren't too big of an issue and you continue the great work \o/
